Our Estate Planning Process

1

Estate Planning Consultation

Once you're qualified, you'll meet with one of our attorneys to go over your needs and outline your goals for your estate plan. This can be in person, by phone, or via video. We'll present you with options for meeting your goals, and explain which ones we recommend for you.

2

Creating Legal Documents

We write up the legal documents you need for your plan, then we go through them with you to make sure they reflect your wishes. We want you to be completely comfortable with your plan. Once it is ready, we help you make sure the documents get executed correctly and stored properly.

3

Guidance & Support

We don't just draft your documents; we make sure you understand how to use them. Because we don't charge hourly, you can be confident that we will take the time to answer all of your questions, all for a fixed fee* you know up front.

How We Work

Fixed Fee Services

The Commons Law Center is different from most law firms. For most of our legal work we do not charge an hourly rate and we do not require a large, up-front retainer payment.

Instead, we offer fixed fee legal services. That means you'll know exactly how much you'll pay for the legal help you need. And we always give you options to keep your legal costs affordable.

You may even qualify for free legal help in some situations.*

Sliding Scale Prices

We price our services on a sliding scale, so the fees you pay are tailored to your income level. We have 6 pricing tiers serving people who make up to 400% of the federal poverty level. Over half of all Oregonians qualify for our affordable legal services.

Pricing for your project will depend on your needs. We work with you to make sure you understand all of your potential fees and costs so you can make an informed decision about the help you can afford.

Teaching & Support

Our goal is to empower you to become a better user of the legal system. We'll help when you need us, but we also want to teach you how to do many things yourself, without needing an expensive full-scope lawyer.

Our team works with our clients to provide the tools, the training, and the templates for you to be able to handle the simple parts of your case yourself. You can always have us review your work so you can be confident that you're doing things right.

If you are uncomfortable doing things yourself, or if you just need the peace of mind that comes from having a professional do the job, you can hire us to do the work for you. We always strive to offer you options that will help you meet your goals and your comfort level at an affordable price.
